- Cryptographic security measures have transitioned from the domain of governments to widespread commercial use. Cryptography is an infrastructural element of the World Wide Web, digital cellular telephony, wireless networks, and most operating systems.
- Many applications depend on cryptography and could not function without it (e.g., automated teller machines, electronic point of sale, and wire-fund transfers). Not with-standing this transition (and perhaps as a direct result) a plethora of cryptographic implementations exist. Such implementations include poorly designed and tested algorithms and protocols; implementations, which default to little or no security; and a hodgepodge of products that don’t play well together. Also, as a consequence of widespread commercial use, cryptanalysis (the breaking of ciphers, codes, or protocols) has experienced explosive growth. Advances in crypto mathematics, in computational speeds, and in networking have made obsolete the algorithms thought to have longer lives and have decimated algorithms once thought to be secure. Regardless of the specific reason, organizations will find it necessary to transition from one cryptographic security solution to another at some point in their existence. Cryptographic transitions, then, is the process by which an organization addresses the problems associated with updating (or initially implementing) cryptographic security measures in response to changes in the environment that require better information security.
